Once again, the RPO forcibly demonstrated what a talented body of skilled musicians can achieve in full flow, when conducted by Jamie Phillips. The programe commenced with a rumbustious rendering of Dvorak’s Carnival Overture. Young violin soloist Irene Duval then impressed with a passionate interpretation of Mendelssohn’s well-loved Violin Concerto whilst achieving the manual dexterity demanded by this piece . The concert climaxed with Tchaikovsky’s equally popular Fifth Symphony which amply demonstrated the wealth of skill of the RPO orchestra, especially in the energetic final movement with so many climaxes.
